Spring Cleaning…Naturally!

I’m always trying to find great tips on how to keep our house clean with budget friendly, safe, natural ideas.  In honor of the 1st day of Spring tomorrow (FINALLY!!!) I’ve put together a list of some of my favorites!!

  1. Vinegar to clean the microwave: I do this on a weekly basis!  All you do is put about a cup or so of basic white vinegar into a glass container (I use a Pyrex measuring cup, usually) and put it in the microwave for 5 minutes.  The vinegar creates steam in the microwave and loosens up all that yucky stuff in there.  Then all you have to do is wipe it out with a warm washcloth.  Sometimes I put a little dish soap on the washcloth to eliminate a little of the vinegar smell! 🙂  Super simple and who doesn’t have vinegar in their pantry?20140318_172834
  2. Cleaning out the drain: You can use this tip to clean out the drains in both your bathtubs and sinks.  First you’ll pour a 1/2 cup of baking soda down, and then a 1/2 cup of vinegar.  Cover the drain with a warm washcloth for about 5 minutes and then pour hot water down the drain.  That’s it!  The baking soda/vinegar combo bubbles and breaks up all the soap scum and bacteria in there!
  3. Cleaning soap scum off the shower head: Fill a gallon size zippy bag or another bigger back/sack with vinegar.  Tie it around the neck of your shower head (I use a hair tie!) so that the shower head is completely submerged in the vinegar.  Let it soak overnight!                                                  20140318_173741
  4. Disinfect/deodorize garbage disposal: Cut up a lemon into chunks and put it through the disposal.  The acid in the lemons cleans the inside of the disposal and the scent leaves it smelling great!  I like to run the peel of an orange through afterwards for an even better citrus smell.
  5. Cleaning grout in between your tile (counters, floor, backsplash): Mix lemon juice with 1-2 teaspoons of cream of tartar until it makes a paste.  Both act as a natural bleaching agent and make for a super easy, safe cleaner!  All you have to do is scrub the grout with the paste and a toothbrush and then rinse when you’re done!
  6. Get the fingerprints off the windows: Mix a 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1/2 a cup of water, add in 10 drops of lavender or lemongrass oil and spray on windows and mirrors.  Wipe off with a paper towel or I like to use newspaper – it works great!
  7. All-purpose orange cleaner: Put the rind of 4 oranges into a jar with 1 cup of white vinegar.  Allow to sit for 2 weeks.  Afterwards, strain out the peel and add 1 cup of water to the orange-infused vinegar.  I use it in a spray bottle as an all purpose cleaner to wash the countertop, table, walls, etc.  Not only do the oranges make it smell yummy but they have natural oils that can cut through grease!20140318_173012

Hopefully you’ll find these tips helpful in keeping your home sparkly clean!! Not only will you be saving money by using things you probably already have at home but you can rest easy knowing they’re safe and natural!  Happy Cleaning!
